| Heres my thought on it:
the android is based off Unix, the same programming that is used for Apple Mac. When i was selling computers, this was a huge selling point for Mac's, they don't get virus' because of the Unix system underneath. Windows has so many backdoors, they have back doors to their back doors, thats why viruses can contaminate Windows.
as for Mac, the Unix shell gives it the protection it needs to overcome these potential pests (viruses)
since the G1 has the Unix shell, my answer would be: No, your G1 cannot get a virus.

| Sounds go to me Temporizer. I do remember reading a lot about the Unix system and this phone. I do have a wee bit of knowledge of the PC/MAC stuff but wondering if the phone could be succeptible because of who knows what.
Thanks for the reply!! | |

| A virus is simply malicious code written for a computer. Of course the G1 can get a virus.
Linux, Unix, Windows, and Apple are all susceptible to malicious programmers and coders.
The safety is in obscurity with more people running an iPhone then a gPhone, the iPhone will be the bigger (in market share and in results) target for a person to attack.
No computer/device is safe. Trust it like you would trust a book or notebook that you know you are going to turn over to someone at some point, and you'll never have a worry.

| Thanks for that Mianosm. *looks concerned* I believe I saw AntiVirus apps or AN app in the Market. Another reason I asked. | |

| Mianosm is correct. everything is susceptible to corruption via an outside hand.
fortunately, it all goes down to the operating system.
we have a Unix based OS. Viruses? yes. very very very few, but yes.
iPhone will get hit harder, yes, but it is still based off of Unix.
I've taken a lot of training on Mac/PC. once i learned that there is only a handful of viruses for Mac and millions and millions of viruses for PC, i started looking in to why.
it's because of the Unix shell.
You should be fine, just like the iPhone should be fine. Unix is fine.

| The reason isn't due to the shell, it's due to the market share. | |

| yes, that, and all the permissions that are set in Unix. if you don't have permission to edit a file/folder, you can't. | |
